Hocus Pocus 2 star Kathy Najimy revealed she was a passionate fan of co-star Bette Midler prior to being cast as Mary Sanderson in the original film. Najimy and Midler played Mary and Winifred Sanderson alongside Sarah Jessica Parker as Sarah Sanderson, who together form a trio of witches resurrected 300 years after their demise in 1993 in the Disney Halloween cult classic. Najimy, Midler, and Parker will reprise their roles in the 2022 Disney+ original movie.
In the 1993 fantasy comedy, Mary, Winifred, and Sarah are resurrected in 1993 Salem, Massachusetts after unwitting teens Max (Omri Katz), Allison (Vinessa Shaw), and Max’s younger sister, Dani (Thora Birch), light a cursed candle that brings them back to life. The witches cause chaos, enchanting the townspeople and resurrecting Winifred’s ex-boyfriend Billy Butcherson (Doug Jones) as a zombie. The main characters vanquish them with the help of cursed cat Thackery Binx (Jason Marsden). However, as revealed by a recently released synopsis for Hocus Pocus 2, the witches would return to Salem 29 years later, with the main cast reprising their roles. Ahead of her return as Mary, Najimy has revealed just how excited she was to be cast alongside Midler in the original movie.
Speaking to Entertainment Tonight about her return to the world of Hocus Pocus, Najimy revealed she was a huge fan of Midler. Najimy confessed in the interview that Midler was a personal idol, saying that she had been chased away by guards when trying to get backstage at Midler’s shows and had even found her apartment. Najimy concluded by saying that working alongside Midler and playing her character’s sister “blew her mind.” Check out Najimy’s full quote below.
“When I was growing up, the idol of my life was Bette Middler…I used to break into backstages of where she was performing. I had guards chasing after me, true story. Found her apartment in New York, left her a note, got dragged away from there. So to be standing next to her, not only in the same movie, but playing her sister…blew. my. mind.”
Najimy, Midler, and Parker aren’t the only members of the cast to return for the sequel, as Jones recently confirmed the return of Billy Butcherson. Jones’ return alongside the three sisters was confirmed in a press release in early November. Despite the Sanderson Sisters and Butcherson being resurrected for the sequel, Katz and Shaw revealed that they hadn’t been asked to return as Max or Allison.
With roles in Hocus Pocus, Sister Act, and King of the Hill, Najimy is recognizable to many fans who would have grown up with her presence in media. As such, it is fun to not only hear her reminisce about her own time as a fan but that her personal fan dream came true. With Disney+ being home to the original cult classic and soon hosting the long-awaited Hocus Pocus 2, new fans can easily discover and enjoy Najimy, Midler, and Parker’s iconic Halloween trio.
