Omicron variant has mutations necessary for ‘greater transmission’

There is an assumption the Omicron variant of COVID may be more transmissible because it has the mutations necessary for “greater transmission,” according to Sydney Institute for Infectious Diseases’ Professor Jamie Triccas.

It comes after two cases of the new variant which was first identified in South Africa were detected in New South Wales.

“We know quite a bit about the different parts of the spike protein … that are necessary for greater transmission and this particular variant has those mutations,” Professor Triccas told Sky News host Chris Smith.

“So the assumption is it may be more transmissible.”
