London’s deputy police chief resigns to take top job in Peterborough | CBC News

One of London’s deputy police chiefs has announced his resignation and taken a promotion in Peterborough, just two weeks after London Police Chief Steve Williams announced his retirement. 

Deputy Chief Stu Betts was appointed the Chief of Police in Peterborough and will leave his London post on Jan. 8. 

“It has been a pleasure working with Deputy Chief Betts,” said Susan Toth, chair of the police services board.

“Throughout his tenure here, we have seen first-hand his commitment to building relationships with the community and with members of the London Police Service. He has shown leadership during difficult times, and the board wishes him the best of luck as Peterborough Chief of Police.”

Betts has been a police officer for 25 years, starting with York Regional Police in 1997. 

“It is with mixed emotions that I leave the London Police Service,” Betts said in a statement.

“It has been a privilege to serve as deputy chief over these past three years and I am grateful for the relationships I have built both within our organization and throughout the community of London. I am proud of the work done each and every day by the sworn and civilian members of London Police Service, and I know they will continue to serve the community with integrity and professionalism.”

On Oct. 18, Williams announced his retirement, meaning London will need to fill two top jobs. 

“While we are sad to lose him, we know that he will bring to Peterborough the same dedication, work ethic and commitment to the community and members of the police service that he showed as deputy chief in London,” Toth said of Betts.
